The Association
employs six attorneys and
a legal secretary to provide a
direct legal assistance program
to our membership that is unique to
state municipal leagues. Our staff has over 100 years
of combined experience in
municipal law. The Legal Services program provides written and
telephone advisory opinions to member municipalities.
We regularly receive over 8,000 calls and letters per year.
Legal advice is also provided through: MMA’s magazine, the
Maine Townsman’s Legal Notes and articles; MMA’s web site at
www.memun.org; manuals explaining the responsibilities of
various municipal officials; seminars and other training
programs; and the preparation of sample ordinances and
information packets.
The legal staff also assists in the representation of
municipal interests in the courts. Through “friend of the
court” briefs, legal services attorneys argue municipal
interests before the Maine Supreme Court in cases of
statewide significance.

The fax number for Legal
