Street Light Siting Application Instruction Sheet

This Maine Municipal Association publication is presented for "Classroom Use Only."  Its intended use is to stimulate and aid in discussion and role playing within a classroom setting.


This instruction sheet is intended to assist applicants in answering some of the questions involving detailed measurements and other information. Graphic information is provided in order to help simplify the questions. The numbers on this instruction sheet correspond to the questions on the application form.

Questions (1) through (7) Self explanatory.

Questions (8&9) These figures are available from the Maine Department of Transportation or the Town Office. Check first with the Town Office. If necessary, call Bob Baker of the Maine Department of Transportation at 287-313 1.

Question (10) Use your best guess. Estimate number during the summer months after dark.

 Question (11) Count the number of homes, apartments, businesses and other principal structures each way for 1000 feet. Do not count accessory buildings such as garages and woodsheds. Each business scores a 200 and each house or other residential dwelling unit scores a 100. Divide the total points by the total distance of 2000 feet to reach a total percent of development.

Question (12) Use your best judgment here.

Question (13) Setbacks are measured in feet from the edge of the roadway to the closest point of the structure. If crossing private property is an uncomfortable situation, ask permission or use reasonable estimates.

Question (14) Count the total number of lit signs each way on both sides of the street for 1000 feet each way. Each sign scores 200. Divide the total points by 2000 to reach a percentage.

Example: 5 signs = 1000 pts.
2000 feet

1000pts. / 2000ft. =:.50 or 50%

Question (15) A walking path other than a sidewalk can be a worn footpath or bicycle path adjacent to the roadway

Question (16) Add up the total areas that are open (indicated with arrows in diagram) to the street for the passage of vehicles for 1000 feet in each direction on each side of the road, Openings include all driveways, parking lots and the entrances to a road or street.

Site Plan

Please include: the proposed location of the streetlight and the street or roadway for 1000 feet in each direction; the general location of strictures, driveways, parking lots and other roadway openings; and the general location of all lit advertising signs and any sidewalks or pedestrian walkways. All features need to be documented for 1000 feet in each direction from the proposed streetlight location.
