"Why can't I cut those trees? They're on my land!"

The Lawsons purchased a piece of property on the lake three years ago. For years the property had been somewhat neglected by the previous owners; brush, alders, trees, and all sorts of wildness had grown up in the 88’ in front of the camp. The Lawsons want to clear out their view of the lake and begin to cut away at the accumulated growth. The Lawsons are told that they can not clear the area in front of the camp and have a lawn all the way to the lake shore. They do not understand, as this is their private property. What kind of advice might you offer that will resolve the conflict? Is there some middle ground?
