Zoning Administrator

Nature of Work

Work involves specialized technical work in the administration, interpretation and enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance.

Work under the general supervisor of the Chief and Assistant Chief of Inspection Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Checks plans and specifications for compliance to zoning codes prior to the issuance of permits for building or alterations.

Makes field inspections as necessary to clarify specific zoning complaints and confers with owners to alleviate violations.

Acts as liaison with the Zoning Appeals Board and other City departments in matters relating to zoning.

Prepares material for presentation to the Appeals Board and attends all Zoning Appeals Board meetings.

Maintains appropriate plans, indexes, and files.

Prepares material for and presents evidence in court cases.

Performs related work as required.

Requirements of Work

Considerable knowledge of zoning codes.

Ability to read blueprints, check plans, specifications, and other materials, evaluating data in relation to code.

Ability to deal effectively with building owners, contractors, and the public.

Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

Ability to analyze and interpret the zoning ordinance of the City of Portland.

Ability to prepare standard format reports.

Ability to supervise as directed by Chief or Assistant Chief of Inspection Services.

Training and Experience Desired

Considerable experience in zoning ordinance work, and graduation from a standard high school or trade school, preferably supplemented by courses in building trades; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
