MCSS
Goals
To provide social studies educators in Maine with an opportunity
to build working relationships with other Maine social studies
educators.
To provide a forum for discussion on elementary/secondary
social studies and on the social studies profession itself.
To provide institutional representation for the interests
of and concerns of social studies educators.
To provide a variety of professional services to Maine
social studies educators, such as offering conferences, workshops,
networking, and quarterly newsletters.
Other
MCSS Activities
As the conduit for materials
from the National Council for the
Social Studies, MCSS strives to keep members informed about
upcoming conferences and programs. MCSS sponsors an annual meeting, conferences,
workshops, a newsletter, and participates
in academic offerings with other professional groups.
Various government agencies
and professional organizations seek dialogue with MCSS on matters
related to social studies education. In such situations,
MCSS often represents the interest of, and collective wisdom of,
social studies educators throughout the state.
Because MCSS exists to serve
social studies educators' needs, MCSS ( with funding from the
Maine Humanities Council, and assistance from the Maine Department
of Educational and Cultural Services, the National Geographic
Society, and through the auspices of the Maine Center for Educational
Services and the University of Maine System) created and completed
a three-phase project on geography for Maine educators.
The project reached over 500 teachers throughout the state
