How to get a tax exempt number or certificate for your municipality

You can not get a State number without a Federal EIN.

 Request a State Tax Exempt Number:  

  1. Complete this Exemption Application for Agencies of Government.
  2. If you have a letter of exemption but no number, include the letter in the fax.
  3. Fax Application to Maine Revenue Service 207-287-6628.

Request a tax "Exemption Certificate":

  1. You must already have an "E" number - exempt tax number.
  2. Call (287-2336) and request an "Exemption Certificate." Be sure to include the "E" number.
  3. The certificate will be ordered that day and mailed to the municipal address the next day.

 

If you don't have a Federal Employee Identification Number (EIN):

  1. Fill in form SS-4 from the Internal Revenue Service.  Adobe Reader Needed - PDF Format
  2. Fax your EIN application (SS-4 above) to:
