2009 Annual Report Competition

Last call!   Have you sent this year’s municipal annual report to MMA?

For the 2009 Municipal Report Competition, MMA needs a copy of your most current annual report by September 1.

If you have any questions about the competition, contact Michael Starn at MMA, mstarn@memun.org or 1-800-452-8786 ext 2221.

MMA Convention Program Available

The MMA Annual Convention is right around the corner! Click on the link to see the hot-off-the-press preliminary program. This year's program features something for everyone.

Energy Efficiency Grant Program

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is establishing an energy-efficiency grant program for municipalities. The source of the funds is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The program elements have not been finalized, but the turnaround time from when the application materials are first available until when they are due back to the PUC may be short. Therefore we wanted to provide a "heads-up" that this program will be announced soon.

Interested municipalities should check both the PUC website and MMA's ARRA web area for more information when it becomes available.

July Winner - Full MMA Conference Registration

Congratulations to Lincoln's Administrator, David Kinney, as the July winner of a free two-day registration for MMA's Annual Convention, October 7 - 8 at the Augusta Civic Center.

We'll be drawing a winner for August, too, so go to the Annual Convention's Attendees Information area and enter to win. If you have already entered, your entry will still be included in the August drawing.

Dividends distributed by Risk Management Services

Because of their good risk management practices, more than 90% of participants in the Workers Compensation Fund, the Unemployment Fund, and the Property & Casualty Pool are receiving dividends this year.

Three pools are returning in excess of $1.3 Million to their members.  Since 1997 more than $13.2 Million of dividends have been delivered to participating members.

For more information about any of the MMA Risk Management Services programs, including online training programs and other services, please check the offerings on their website at www.memun.org and click on the Risk Management Services link, or call 1‑800-590-5583.

‘Red Flags’ Deadline Delayed Again

The FTC said the latest delay is intended to give creditors more time to develop and implement written Identity Theft Prevention Programs.

The Red Flags rule requires entities that regularly permit deferred payments for goods or services (“creditors”) to adopt an identity theft prevention and detection program. Municipal utilities such as water and sewer departments are subject to the new Red Flags rule.

For more information, the FTC has a website dedicated to the Red Flags rule at www.ftc.gov/redflagsrule.

As we advised in the May 2009 issue of MMA Today, municipal utilities should be working with their local attorneys to ensure compliance with the Red Flags rule by the new November 1st deadline.
