In last month’s Municipal Bulletin Board, the winners of MMA’s Municipal Reports Competition were listed. The Town of Belgrade received an Excellence award in the 2,500-4,999 population category and was inadvertently omitted from the listing in the Maine Townsman.


Maine Municipal Association will be closing at 12 noon for the remainder of the day on Friday, December 16 to allow all our employees to attend our holiday employee recognition luncheon.

As a reminder, MMA offices will also be closed on Monday, December 26 for Christmas and on Monday, January 2 for New Year’s.


The final dates for MMA’s Elected Officials Workshop are December 6 in Farmington and December 7 in Cumberland.

This is an important workshop for selectmen and councilors, especially newly elected ones. The workshop covers many of the laws that elected officials will have to deal with in their duties.

The workshop runs from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. and is conducted by attorneys from the MMA Legal Services department. Registration is $40, with newly-elected getting a half-price discount.

Maine Fire Training & Education, a department of Southern Maine Community College, has  established a new grant program to help local fire departments working in partnership to offer regional fire academy training programs in Maine. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to municipalities and counties on a 50% match basis to help fund basic fire training academies. Grant funds may be used for  supplies, equipment, instructor salaries and expenses, and other direct costs. Applications are available online at or calling Maria Valdez at MFT&E, 741-5555.


The Maine Welfare Directors Association will hold a workshop on December 2 at the Lewiston City Hall on “DHS Policy & Review Process and Maine State Statutes /MMA Ordinance”. This workshop will provide a basic overview of the principles of general assistance law.

Mark your calendars for March 14 th at the Augusta Civic Center. MMA will be conducting its Technology Conference.

This conference will include sessions on emerging technologies that affects municipal governments as well as some basic computer training. The conference will also have exhibitors.

The Maine Town & City Management Association will be hosting a workshop called “The Municipal Manager and The Code of Ethics” on December 9 from 12:00pm-4:00pm at the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland. Martha Perego, ethics advisor for the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), will facilitate the workshop.
