URBAN DESIGNER

Planning & Urban Development Department -

The City of Portland Planning and Urban Development Department is seeking an experienced planning and design professional to fill the position of Urban Designer. The ideal candidate requires excellent communication skills to undertake a wide variety of development review and special planning projects, including design review, public art, site plan review, public engagement and management of long-range planning processes. The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes: knowledge of best and emerging practices in city planning and regulatory mechanisms, particularly those related to urban form; professional knowledge, skills, training and experience in the field of urban design, including architecture, landscape architecture, and/or environmental design; ability to plan and conduct community workshops with an emphasis on creative and graphic engagement; ability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively with teammates, elected officials, residents and other stakeholders; skill working with graphic imaging and modeling methods, such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite (PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign). A minimum of two years of experience in urban design and a Bachelor's degree in architecture, city planning, urban design, or design related field is required. A Master's degree in architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, urban design, or environmental design is preferred. Any equivalent combination of knowledge skills and abilities required. Starting annual salary range:  $60,586.76 to $68,250/year, plus 6% differential to be paid upon attainment of a State of Maine certification as a Landscape Architect or upon attainment of certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) as a Certified Planner.
