This webinar is designed to help elected officials, municipal managers and other leaders learn what motivates people to get involved at the local level, how to encourage citizen participation and how to channel that energy as productively as possible.
There are many ways in which people participate in civic, community and political life and, by doing so, express their engaged citizenship. From volunteering to voting, from community organizing to political advocacy, the defining characteristic of active civic engagement is the commitment to participate and contribute to the improvement of one’s neighborhood, city or town – and nation. But, how can municipal leaders energize citizens in productive and positive ways? This webinar looks at motivations for civic engagement and the tools to use to help bring it on.
Chris Gates works with a variety of philanthropic and non-profit organizations on the issues of philanthropic and non-profit practice, political reform and civic engagement. His clients have included the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Kettering Foundation, New America, Common Cause, Council on Foundations, Bipartisan Policy Center, Bridge Alliance, Common Ground Solutions and California Forward. He is an elected Fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration, a lecturer at Georgetown University on trends in the philanthropic and non-profit sectors, and a regular speaker at leadership training programs and philanthropic gatherings across the country.
Gates previously led three national organizations. He served as President of the Sunlight Foundation, which works to bring more accountability and transparency to America’s government and politics; Executive Director of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement, an affinity group of the Council on Foundations; and President of the National Civic League (NCL), America’s oldest good government organization. While at NCL he also served as the Co-Director of the United States Healthy Communities Initiative and Co-Director of John Gardner’s Alliance for National Renewal.
