The City of Rochester, New Hampshire (population 29,745) is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Fire Chief, which is becoming vacant after the retirement of the incumbent’s 12 years of service as Fire Chief.
Located in southeastern New Hampshire, the department covers a response area of 46 square miles, and operates from two stations. The Department is a ISO Class 3 organization that employs 39 career firefighters and 20 on call personnel, which includes an Assistant Chief, a Fire Marshal, 2 Deputy Chiefs, 4 Captains, 4 Lieutenants, and 26 firefighters. The department responded to 2,779 emergency calls in 2016. The annual operating budget is $4.27M.
The Chief is appointed by and reports to the City Manager. Candidates must have strong leadership, planning, and managerial skills, combined with excellent interpersonal and communications skills. A proven, successful record of experience in progressively responsible supervisory, administrative, and command assignments is required.
Minimum qualifications include: Bachelors’ Degree in Fire Science or Fire Administration; Master’s preferred; 15 years of fire suppression experience as a career member in an organized fire department; and at least 6 years of experience as a command officer in a comparable or larger organization. A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Candidates must possess or can obtain New Hampshire or Pro Board Fire Officer I/II certification and ICS/NIMS Training through level 300/400.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: budgeting, crafting collaborative interagency relationships, labor management relations in a unionized environment, pacing change, fireground management, incident command, and emergency management. Consideration will be given to Graduates of the National Fire Academies Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP).
Salary range is $95,064 – $127,730 DOQ and experience. Residency required within 6 months of appointment.
