Code Enforcement Officer/Constable

 

 

The City of Sanford is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fulfill the position of Code Enforcement Officer/Constable with the Code Enforcement Department.  

 

This is technical and administrative position responsible for the enforcement, in a uniform and equitable manner, of all municipal codes, zoning ordinances and other applicable federal and state laws coming under this jurisdiction. The position will coordinate with the City’s Land Bank Authority Office, Support Staff, Police Department and Fire Department in the administration and compliance of the City’s local code enforcement.  Work is performed under the direction and guidance of the Chief Code Enforcement Officer, but the Code Enforcement Officer is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative in accomplishing code enforcement objectives as well as maintaining departmental records and reports. This position requires considerable contact with the public in addition to maintaining a liaison with appropriate state and local agencies. 

 

Prospective applicants must possess a two-year college degree in building construction, structural design, criminal justice, public administration, business administration or a related field is required. Considerable experience in the construction industry, as a journeyman electrician, or as a plumber is desirable. Minimum of one year experience in a position which involves extensive contact and interaction with the public with enforcement, inspection, investigation, or customer service required.  Experience in the construction trades or as a Codes Enforcement Officer may be substituted in lieu of college degree.  

 

Additional Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain certification as described in Title 30-A, including, but not limited to, Basic Code Enforcement Certification. (Will be expected to obtain Advanced Certification as it becomes available.) Preferred upon hire; required within one year of employment.
  • Successful completion of State Legal and Court Rule 80-K course within one year of hire
  • Must possess and maintain Maine State Local Plumbing Inspector License; preferred upon hire; or required within one year of employment.
  • NFPA Fire Inspector 1 training and ICC Property Maintenance training within three years of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid appropriate State of Maine motor vehicle operator’s license.
