Economic Development and Code Enforcement Officer – Enfield, Maine

The Town of Enfield, Maine is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Economic Development and Code Enforcement Officer.  Enfield is a rural community of 1,435 year-round residents, as well as a home to a considerable seasonal population. Enfield features one of Maine’s most prestigious lakes - Cold Stream Pond and Maine’s largest lumber producing sawmill - Pleasant River Lumber.

The Economic Development and Code Enforcement Officer works closely with the public, contractors, Town Office staff and Town Manager; as well as Town Selectboard and Planning Board.  The job of the Economic Development and Code Enforcement Officer includes but is not limited to; essential planning and development duties such as permitting, development review, long-range planning, zoning, and grant writing/administration; review of site plans and permit applications; field inspections on residential and commercial construction projects, internal plumbing, and subsurface wastewater disposal systems; and enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and codes relating to the protection of public health, welfare, and land use.

The Town is seeking an individual for this administrative and technical position who is highly motivated and either possesses or is willing to develop the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Economic Development, Comprehensive Planning and Land Use/Zoning
  • Permitting, field inspection, and enforcement of Land Use Regulations, Shoreland Zoning, Internal Plumbing, Subsurface Wastewater Disposal, and Building Standards
  • Ordinance development and grant writing/administration

The ideal candidate is familiar with the structure and practice of the municipal code enforcement office, municipal planning board and appeals board procedures, application review and permitting procedures, inspection procedures, and methods and procedures of enforcement; possesses excellent written and oral communication skills; can successfully interact with the public, committee groups and members of the Select Board. A positive mindset and ability to work independently using sound judgment is a must.

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program, or any equivalent combination of experience and training related to the job duties and responsibilities. College degree and/or professional certification, including Code Enforcement Officer and Local Plumbing Inspector certifications preferred. Must be able to obtain all certifications within 12 months of hire.

The Town offers a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, 457(b) retirement option, mileage stipend, paid time off, and a Monday through Thursday primary work schedule. Successful candidates will need to have flexible scheduling to accommodate Friday appointments for permit inspections and weeknight meetings as needed. Salaried position with pay starting at $44,000.00/year based on experience and certification.
