SAGADAHOC COUNTY - POSITION DESCRIPTION

Department:  District Attorney

Job Title: Domestic Violence Investigator                  Hourly Rate: $37.00               

Job Relationship:

  1. Responsible to the District Attorney, Deputy District Attorney or any Assistant DA assigned to Sagadahoc County, as well as the Office Manager.
  2. Manner of Review and Approval of Work:  Activities are reviewed and evaluated by the District Attorney or Office Manager.

Job Summary: The Domestic Violence Investigator is responsible for investigating domestic violence cases by working with law enforcement agencies, victims, victim advocates, and the courts to provide a consistent and effective response to domestic violence throughout Sagadahoc County.

Essential and Representative Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement follow up procedures after the initial police response to a domestic violence report.
  • Develop and implement an improved system for referrals by law enforcement to victims' services.
  • Develop and implement consistent policies and procedures for domestic violence response among all law enforcement agencies in Sagadahoc County, the District Attorney's Office, and victim service providers.
  • Assist the Prosecutor and primary investigating agency in domestic violence cases by obtaining additional evidence, including but not limited to: recorded victim and witnesses’ interviews, photographs, physical evidence and perpetrator interviews.
  • Work with local law enforcement to implement the District Attorney Bail Check Policy
  • Identify and help provide specialized training for law enforcement officers to increase arrests and successful prosecutions.
  • Identify data collection needs and establish a county-wide, community-based, data collection process.
  • Improve collaboration and cross-training between agencies responsible for intervention in domestic violence cases.
  • Assist the District Attorney in locating victims and witnesses to ensure attendance at court.
  • Draft and submit Arrest Warrants as well as Search Warrants.
  • Jointly direct the Sagadahoc County Domestic Violence Multi-Disciplinary Team alongside the DV VWA.
  • Assume such other duties as are assigned by the District Attorney or Office Manager.

Working Conditions and Job Hazards: The work involves regular contact with perpetrators and home visits to victims and perpetrators, which can be unpredictable, volatile and hazardous.  Some operation of a county-owned vehicle included.  While much of the work may be accomplished during normal business hours, non-standard hours will also be routine. This is a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit, walk, speak, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to operate controls; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level is usually moderate. 

Specifications/Qualifications:

  1. Education and training: High school graduate or equivalent. Two or more years post-secondary education is highly desirable.
  2. Minimum two years’ recent experience as a full-time law enforcement officer with thorough knowledge of Maine criminal laws.  Prior experience as an investigator preferred.
  3. Maintain current Maine Criminal Justice Academy certification.
  4. Pass an extensive background/criminal history check, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
  5. Good communications skills are necessary, as is the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  6. Consistently demonstrate good judgement and accountability while working independently and under stressful conditions.
  7. A clear commitment to protecting the rights of victims. Prior experience in domestic violence investigation or prosecution is highly desirable.
  8. Proven history of maintaining good relationships with members of multiple law enforcement agencies.
  9. Comprehensive, highly developed, social and professional skills ranging from diplomatic interactions with members of the public, to effective and compassionate treatment of victims under stress.
