Position Overview: The Town of Gouldsboro is seeking an active, experienced, and dedicated Police Chief to lead its small but vital police department. As the chief law enforcement officer, the selected candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring public safety, fostering community trust, and upholding the values of integrity, professionalism, and service excellence. Please note: this is an active patrol position requiring good physical condition.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to the Gouldsboro Police Department through both administrative and patrol duties.
  • Oversee all aspects of law enforcement operations, including patrol, investigations, community policing, and emergency response.
  • Review, revise, develop, and implement policies, procedures, and training programs to promote best practices in policing, as necessary.
  • Foster positive relationships with community members and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop relationships and maintain cooperative agreements with other law enforcement agencies (county, state).
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards of conduct.
  • Effectively manage departmental resources, including budgetary and personnel matters.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the department.

Qualifications:

  • Sound judgment, integrity, and a commitment to ethical conduct.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, with at least three years in a supervisory or command role.
  • Graduation from a recognized police academy and possession of valid Maine law enforcement certification (or ability to obtain in a reasonable time following hire).
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field (preferred).
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, technologies, and trends.
  • Familiarity with community-oriented policing principles and community engagement strategies.
  • Possession of a valid Maine driver’s license.
