The Town of Orono, home to the University of Maine, has openings for career-oriented candidates to join our fire department. Orono Fire is an all-hazards response agency responsible for the delivery of fire, emergency medical, and technical rescue services to the Town and the University of Maine. 

Position Summary

The work schedule is 24/72, average 42-hour week. Orono Fire operates out of one centrally located station and staffs five firefighters per shift. Orono Fire has the distinction of providing hazardous materials response services for Penobscot County and serving as a designated State Regional Response Team. 

Candidates who are selected will be required to perform firefighting, driving, and operations of apparatus, emergency medical services, community outreach, and special operations duties including hazardous materials response 

Minimum Qualifications:

-Must be at least 18 years of age

-High school diploma or equivalent

-Valid Maine driver's license or ability to attain prior to employment

-Willingness to be a contributing member of a team that values collaboration, exploration, and personal growth

 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Proboard or IFSAC Firefighter I or I/II

-Maine or National Registry Paramedic, Advanced EMT, or EMT. Preference will be given to Paramedics 

-Current hazardous materials operations or technician certification 

-Associate degree in Fire Science, Paramedicine, Business, or a similar area of study

 

The Benefits

$20.62-24.52 (42 hours per week base)

-Professional Licensure Stipend (Paramedic - $1.75) (AEMT- $0.60)

-Educational Stipend (Bachelors- $1.00) (Associates-$0.50)

-Retirement: Maine State Retirement 2/3 after 25 years w/COLA

The department recently received a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant which will increase staffing to 6 personnel per shift.
