Chief of Police Position Announcement

The Town of Rangeley, Maine is actively seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to assume the role of Chief of Police. Rangeley, with approximately 1,200 year-round residents and a larger seasonal population, boasts a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and small-town charm.   

The Police Chief is a key leadership role within our community, responsible for providing strategic direction, fostering community partnerships, and ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of effective law enforcement leadership, community engagement, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Police Department, ensuring the highest standards of public safety and community service
  • Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and programs to address current and emerging public safety issues
  • Foster positive community relations through open communication, community engagement, and collaboration with local organizations and stakeholders
  • Effectively manage department resources, including budgetary responsibilities, personnel, and equipment
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards governing law enforcement practices
  • Foster collaborations with area law enforcement agencies
  • Uphold the highest standards of law enforcement professionalism

Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership experience within a law enforcement agency
  • Minimum of ten years of law enforcement experience with a demonstrated progression of increasing responsibilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field (preferred)
  • Certification from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in community-oriented policing
  • Proven leadership skills with a focus on fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective community partnerships
  • Experience in performance management and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies is preferred
  • Valid Maine driver’s license
  • Comparable combinations of service or educational levels are encouraged to apply
