The City of South Portland, is currently seeking an Equipment Operator II to join the Public Works Team at our Transfer Station Facility. This position is a full time, year-round, benefits-eligible, Union position with a rich benefits package.
This position is responsible for the efficient operation of the Transfer Facility, operating a variety of heavy equipment including but not limited to, grader, front-end loader, bulldozer and roll-off truck as well as keeping all required records and accepting revenue from residents. Position is responsible for transporting waste material to area disposal facilities. This position is also responsible for snowplowing operations. This position works a forty (40) hour non-traditional workweek.
Equipment operators are responsible for safe, operation of front end loaders, sweepers and all associated attachments utilized by the Public Works Department. The Equipment Operator II performs preventative maintenance tasks and making minor repairs and adjustments on the vehicles. Drivers must have skills in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing and judging overhead and side clearances, turning radius and braking distances. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations for moving vehicles are of utmost importance. Some knowledge of methods used in such laboring duties as repairing shoulders, hard-surfaced roads and sidewalks, constructing parking areas and walkways, cleaning, and roadside debris collection. Must be a team player willing to cooperate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and outside contacts. Must have three years of prior experience in operating equipment associated with the Transfer Station. Previous customer service experience preferred.
Must have and maintain a valid State of Maine Class B commercial driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
