Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife - F.A.Q. for Municipalities

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has updated their Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for municipalities to help understand the department’s authority and municipal authority in current statutes governing several activities municipalities may encounter such as: Hunting, Fishing, Trapping, Jurisdiction over Great Ponds, Public Trust Doctrine, Public Usage on Great Ponds, Moorings, Navigational Aids, Wildlife Causing Damage, Shooting Ranges, Recreational Vehicles and how to contact State Agencies for further guidance.

The guidance document is not legal advice but should provide an excellent first resource for questions municipal officials may encounter and a general department view of the matters.  If you have further questions, we encourage municipalities to reach out to MDIFW directly.

You may also search MMA’s guidance around matters covered in legal notes and manuals through your member login portal.

The MDIFW Guidance Document is accessible here (Updated July 2024)
