Local Health Officer

Training for: Code Enforcement

The Town of Canton has an immediate opening for the position of Local Health Officer.  This position is paid by stipend. The Local Health Officer is responsible for protection of occupants in a “dangerous building”, inspection & examination of any place or premises where filth or a public health threat may exist, removal of filth on a property, unlawful dumping, etc.  Duties for this position include being the overall health resource to the community, mediator & problem-solver in the resolution of complaints and investigating & enforcing complaints.  The Local Health Officer will report to and inform the Selectboard on the community’s health status & will report to the Maine CDC on any perceived local public health threats.

The ideal candidate will be qualified by education, training, or experience in the field of public health or a combination as determined by standards adopted by department rule.  If candidate does not have these qualifications they will have 6 months after appointment to obtain them.  The Maine CDC will provide a 6 hour training.  This position is a 3 year appointment that can be renewed.
