IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING REGISTRATION RATES: MMA is utilizing grant funds from the Maine Workforce Development Compact (MWDC) to cover a portion of the cost for this workshop for employees of MMA member municipalities who meet eligibility requirements. To access this training at the discounted rate, you must complete an eligibility questionnaire while registering, indicating that you meet all the eligibility requirements and agree to the grant funding conditions. If you do not meet or agree to the grant eligibility requirements, you are still able to register at the MMA Member – Non-Grant Eligible or Non-Member rates. Please review the section below titled “Grant Eligibility Requirements for MMA Training” for further details.
Who Should Attend this Workshop: This training is designed for both freshly appointed and experienced supervisors and managers. Administrators of Towns and Cities, including Clerks and Council members, will also find this training beneficial.

Course Information:
This course focuses on the importance of managing oneself as a leader, understanding the difference between observations and interpretations, and the distinction between power and authority. Additionally, we will delve into the power of empathy and understanding one's triggers. Participants learn to use these concepts and many more to lead teams effectively. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to continue their journey toward becoming successful leaders, managing themselves and others effectively, and leading from a position of empathy and authority.
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize how to use the heat in the room.
- Understand the difference between an observation and an interpretation.
- Implement effective empathetic responses.
- Identify techniques for coaching and counseling.
- Use diplomacy and tact in difficult situations.
- Adopt a systems approach to understanding the team you are working with.
- Recognize the cost of failing to supervise.
Grant Eligibility Requirements for MMA Training - Maine Workforce Development Compact
For those who are eligible, MMA is utilizing grant funds from the Maine Workforce Development Compact (MWDC) to cover 50% of the cost of an external training provider for this training or workshop. Other costs, such as meals and facility fees, are included in your registration fee at their full amount because they are not grant-eligible expenses.
To access this training at the discounted rate, please read and review the eligibility requirements below. By registering for the training, you are indicating that you: 1) meet all the eligibility requirements, 2) agree with the grant funding conditions, and 3) understand that you may be invoiced for the full cost of the training at a later date if you are found not to meet all the eligibility requirements.
MWDC Eligibility Requirements and Grant Funding Conditions
In order to receive discounted training supported by MWDC grant funds, you must:
- Be a paid employee of an MMA member municipality
- Provide frontline services and work within your municipality for at least a portion of your time
- Provide demographic information via an online registration, evaluation, and exit survey provided directly to you via email by the Maine Community College System in a timely manner
- Not have exceeded $1,200 in matching MWDC grant funds in the current calendar year, whether accessed directly through your employer or through an association such as MMA

Cancellations for MMA Workshops:
Cancellations must be submitted using this Cancellation form to cancel your registration for an event. Cancellations received before 7/29/25 will be assessed a $15 administrative fee for processing. Cancellations received on/after 7/29/25 will be charged 50% of the course fee. Any registrant who does not attend and does not cancel their registration (i.e., no-show) and any cancellation received the day of the event will be charged the full registration fee.
