POSITION:                 Public Works/Highway Department CDL Truck Driver / Laborer / Equipment Operator

LOCATION:              Solon, Maine

SALARY:                    $20.00 - $24.00 per hour based on qualifications (as of 01.01.2025)

SUPERVISOR:          Road Commissioner

NATURE OF WORK:

This position requires the operation of various pieces of town equipment (including Class C and CDL Class B); gravel truck, snowplows, loader, grader, backhoe, and other assigned equipment or vehicles. This is a skilled position consisting of equipment operation, manual labor and maintenance repair of various pieces of light and heavy motorized equipment used in road construction, road maintenance, snow removal and other generalized work. Employee of this class must be able to correctly diagnose and make minor repairs on a variety of equipment. Employee must have the ability to operate the various pieces of equipment when required to assist the Public Works Department. All such job functions done with independence and subject to review upon completion by the Road Commissioner. At various times, upon direction of Road Commissioner, this position will include manual labor functions.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates various pieces of equipment - trucks, loader, grader, backhoe and/or other pieces of town or rental equipment as licenses and training are obtained. Performs repairs on equipment as the situation warrants - examples may include but not be limited to: electrical, hydraulic repairs, brakes and minor repair. Performs regular preventative maintenance on vehicles - oil changes, filters, belt changes and lubrication as necessary. Assists with preparation of trucks and other equipment for different seasonal jobs including repairing and maintaining sanders and snowplows. Assists public works road crews and other departmental activities by driving equipment or performing manual labor tasks. Participates in the seasonal plowing and sanding of Town streets and/or roads. Performs related work for such tasks as culvert replacement, ditching, roadside cleanup, brush cutting and other jobs as required.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Knowledge of general maintenance requirements of various pieces of light to heavy motorized equipment. May be required to lift equipment, tools or in combination in excess of 75 pounds. Skill in use of tools and the operation of machines and equipment employed in automobile repair and maintenance. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involving the operation of automotive vehicles. Ability to drive various pieces of equipment used by the Town. 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

High school graduation and experience in the operation of various pieces of construction or road equipment, the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employee is required to have a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL), and to maintain the licensure as part of the position, and the employee shall be insurable under the Town’s vehicle insurance coverage.

SUMMARY

 

This position is a full time, semi-skilled manual labor job for the Municipal Highway Department.  The position requires the operation of light to moderately heavy trucks and all truck attachments, as well as the use of several pieces of heavy equipment.  Knowledge of municipal road maintenance, vehicle repair and maintenance and OSHA regulations desirable. Special requirements include an A or B commercial driver’s license, experience in winter road plowing and sanding and to be insurable under the Town’s vehicle insurance coverage. 

Winter hours may be assigned on-call and will vary as determined by the needs of the Town of Solon Department of Public Works during inclement weather, emergency situations, or at the discretion of the Road Commissioner and or his/her designee.

Salary ranges from $20.00 - $24.00 per hour based on experience. Benefits include insurance premium reimbursement and/or contribution to a 457b retirement plan, 12 paid holidays, two weeks’ vacation and up to 40 hours of Earned Paid Leave.
