Portland’s Code Enforcement Officers are part of a great team that helps keep Portland’s buildings and people safe!

The City’s Permitting and Inspections Department seeks a full-time (37.5 hours) Code Enforcement Officer or Electrician who can work both independently and as part of a team to enforce plumbing, electrical, life safety, and building codes (Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code - MUBEC), and other city ordinances. This self-motivated individual will conduct field inspections on commercial and residential construction projects, read building plans, record results, and communicate effectively with the public to resolve code violations. Candidates must have excellent customer service skills to be able to work with a diverse base of property owners, architects, engineers, contractors and the general public. Preferred candidates will have knowledge and experience in building code administration and enforcement, building trades and construction, general inspection work, and/or plan review. Familiarity with computer programs including laptop/field tablet equipment is a plus.

The Department offers flexible work options such as a 4-day compressed work week. Must have, or be able to obtain within six months of hire, Maine Code Enforcement Certification in legal issues, land use, shoreland zoning, internal plumbing, subsurface wastewater disposal, and building, energy, and ventilation standards. Must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license, access to a vehicle for daily work use, and must have and maintain a good driving record. Journeyman or Master Electricians are encouraged to apply, but this is not a requirement.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check. 

CEBA Union position - Grade 18M-SP - Starting pay $1,020.00 - $1,051.88/week, commensurate with experience, plus an additional 6% stipend if certified as a Maine Master Electrician or Master Plumber.
