IT NETWORK TECHNICIAN – Information Technology Department -

Nature of Work - This position is responsible for technical work supporting a wide range of infrastructure assets in the City of Portland’s Information Systems network.  Employees in this classification will install, maintain and secure City networking equipment and related applications and will spend about 75% of their workday installing, maintaining and monitoring equipment and applications and 25% managing data supporting the network including documentation and help desk tickets.

Supervision Received - This position reports to the Deputy IT Director or designee.  Supervision Exercised - None. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Configures, installs and maintains physical networking hardware and related components according to industry best practices and City procedures.  Manages and administers the City’s IP schema.  Configures VoIP components and protocols including DHCP and LLDP.  Monitors critical network metrics and alerts and responds accordingly.  Troubleshoots connectivity for wired and wireless technologies.  Escalates urgent issues to management when necessary. Participates in addressing network vulnerabilities and other information security activities.  Participates in addressing network vulnerabilities and other information security activities.  Manages documentation of systems and maintenance work performed. 

Requirements of Work - Combined 6 years experience and/or education of the following types (mandatory):  Three+ years working in a Tier-2 (or higher) support, Service Desk Tech or Field Engineering role.  Three+ years experience working in a systems administrator or NOC role.  Two+ years of further education in computer sciences.  CompTIA Network+ Certification or equivalent preferred.  Working knowledge of network switch, router, wireless and firewall technologies.  Considerable knowledge of TCP/IP protocols.  Considerable knowledge of voice over IP (VoIP) components.  Experience with network diagramming.  Working knowledge of ITSM systems such as BMC Track-It.  Experience with formal change management process.  Working knowledge of Google productivity tools and/or MS Office.  Working knowledge of Information Security best practices (including but not limited to NIST, CJIS, HIPAA, PCI, municipal).  Proven experience in high pressure, high production work environment/s preferred.  High attention to detail and degree of focus and concentration to achieve complex tasks independently.  Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues about technical issues.  Ability to follow instructions, ask clarifying questions, consider multiple solutions to problems, deliver correct work on time by prioritizing, using time management, and customer service/ negotiating skills.  Working knowledge of municipal government functions. 

Necessary Special Requirements - Must possess a valid State Class C driver’s license and have and maintain a good driving record.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.  

Pro-Tech Union position – Grade 8 - Pay range: $61,990.76 - $76,225.76/year, based on relevant years of experience.
