Do you love working with people and helping them discover great books, resources, and community programs? Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook is seeking a friendly, detail-oriented, and tech-savvy Library Assistant to join our team!
In this role, you'll provide excellent customer service at our service desks, assist patrons with finding materials and using library technology, support programming for all ages, and help maintain our library collections. Key Responsibilities:
- Staffing library service desks and helping patrons in person and by phone
- Checking materials in and out using library software
- Supporting readers’ advisory and materials requests
- Assisting with public computers, printers, and other technology
- Developing and presenting library programs, both in the library and in the community
- Processing interlibrary loans and shelving materials
- Contributing to library displays, social media, and newsletter content
Education and Qualifications:
- A college degree or equivalent experience
- 1–3 years of library or public service experience preferred
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Proficiency with computers and willingness to learn new software
- Ability to work independently, stay organized, and manage multiple tasks
- Experience with library systems (e.g., Sierra, MINERVA) is a plus

Compensation and Benefits:
- Competitive salary range of $20.07 - $23.26 per hour.
- This position is covered by the General Unit collective bargaining agreement.
- Generous paid leave including vacation, sick, and 13 holiday per year.
- Retirement program of the Maine Public Employees Retirement Plan (Maine PERS) or defined 457 with matching up to 6%.

About the City of Westbrook:
The City of Westbrook was a traditional mill city that has grown and diversified significantly over the last two decades to become a residential hub and business center for the region. Westbrook has a population of over 20,000 and covers 17.36 square miles. Westbrook is centrally located to both urban and rural amenities. Currently, the City employs approximately 195 full-time and 80 variable hour employees covered by five different Collective Bargaining Agreements. Established in 1891 with a generous donation from local businessman Joseph Walker, the Walker Memorial Library offers a range of educational, recreational, and cultural services to the Westbrook community. In 1989, a major expansion increased the library’s size from 4,000 to 17,000 square feet. The library provides services such as lending books, magazines, audiobooks, and e-books; curbside pickup; public programming; computer access; and community meeting rooms. The library is also involved in local community outreach programs and educational workshops. It is a central resource for lifelong learning and community engagement. The library is staffed by four full-time and ten part-time employees.
