Position Overview
The Town of Buxton is seeking a motivated person to fill the Position of Deputy Town Clerk. The Deputy Clerk provides back-up support for the Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Motor Vehicle Agent, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Agent and Registrar of Voters. This position is responsible for assisting with issuing marriage, birth, and death certificates, marriage licenses, dog licenses, absentee ballots, game licenses and recreational vehicle registrations. This position is also responsible for assisting with the collection of taxes, preparation and execution of motor vehicle registrations, transfers, and other transactions required by state law for motor vehicles and trailers. This position requires public contact, the handling of money, a high level of professionalism, a positive image and the ability to handle a multitude of tasks to ensure the public is served efficiently and effectively.
Job Description
- Collects revenue from real estate tax and personal property tax and transmits to the Business Office Manager according to the Internal Control Document and the Maine Municipal Association (MMA) Tax Collector’s Handbook.
- Answer property owner and financial institution requests for information regarding property taxes and tax liens due or paid.
- Collects excise, State sales tax and registration fees as appropriate for motor vehicles, trailers, motor homes, snowmobiles, boats, ATVs and motorcycles.
- Acts as backup to the Motor Vehicle & Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Agent with weekly and monthly reports.
- Prepares and issues marriage licenses and birth, marriage and death certificates.
- Issues dog licenses and aids with overdue notices.
- Issues absentee ballots, registers voters and aids with other election and voter registration duties.
- Assist the Town Clerk with election day preparation.
- Assist the Town’s Agent to the Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife by issuing hunting and fishing licenses.
- Responsible for coordinating and maintaining an inventory of and ordering office supplies.
- Oversee the notification and collection of the Town’s Rescue Subscription program.
- Being a Maine Notary and performing Notary services.
- Perform duties utilizing all Town policies, ordinances and procedures and State and Federal laws on a timely basis.
- Performs other related tasks, as requested.
Experience
- Prior experience in a professional work environment.
- Working knowledge of computers.
- Ability to handle sensitive issues involving the public with tact.
- Previous telephone experience.
- Familiarity with Municipal and State systems such as TRIO WEB, MOSES, DAVE and CVR is a plus.
- Prior Municipal and Notary experience is a plus.

Reporting
This position reports to the Town Clerk.
Starting Salary Level Based on Experience.
$22.50 to $24.50 per hour
