The Position
The City of Saco Fire Department is accepting applications for the Firefighter/EMS Provider position. “The Saco Fire Department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for present and future generations of our community. This is a responsible and professional position that will respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for the city. The primary function of a Saco Firefighter/EMS Provider is to protect the community from disaster and emergencies, provide emergency medical care, and promote an environment of public safety within the City of Saco Fire Department’s response area.
This position also participates in fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment and facility maintenance, and training dealing with all phases of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, rescue, and emergency medical operations. Work hours are typically two 24 hour shifts: 24 on, 48 off, 24 on, 96 off.
The Qualifications
A High School diploma or a GED is required. Maine BLS Structural Fire Firefighter, or equivalent and, Maine EMS EMT-B are required. Must obtain Maine EMS EMT-P License and Firefighter 2 prior to the completion of probationary period. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license. Compliance with Maine EMS Chapter 21 – Immunizations is required. Leading candidates for this position will be required to pass a criminal background check, reference checks, required medical examinations including a physical and a drug screening. Applicants who are Firefighter II/Paramedic certified will have a preference in hiring.
Applicants must possess the physical strength and ability to perform firefighting or pre-hospital medical care duties. In addition, the applicant must have good listening and communication skills and can establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, city officials, and the public.

Compensation and Benefits:
Beginning May 1, 2025, probationary wages for Firefighters range from $27.93 - $32.57 depending on EMS License Level and Educational Incentives. Lateral Transfer wages increases may be available with applicable experience and work history.
