The City of Westbrook was a traditional mill city that has grown and diversified significantly over the last two decades to become a residential hub and business center for the region. Westbrook has a population of over 20,000 and covers 17.36 square miles. Westbrook is centrally located to both urban and rural amenities. Currently, the City employs approximately 195 full-time and 80 variable hour employees covered by five different Collective Bargaining Agreements. The departments contained within the City are the Mayor’s Office, Economic Development, City Clerk, Finance, Human Resources, Planning, Code Enforcement, & Assessing, Public Services, Community Services, General Assistance, Library, Police, Fire & Rescue, and Dispatch.

The City of Westbrook is hiring for the position of Equipment Technician. Under direction, this position is responsible for inspecting, overhauling, repairing, and maintaining gasoline and diesel automotive vehicles, trucks, tractors, cranes, and other power-driven equipment.  Performs related work as required. The department consists of 3 Equipment Technicans, One Supervisor, and One Manager.

Job Duties:

  • Repairs and maintains municipal owned vehicles as required.
  • Inspects and diagnoses gasoline, diesel, automotive and construction equipment to determine the need for repairs.
  • Overhauls and repairs clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, universal joints, motors, ignitions, carburetors and hydraulic systems of vehicles, trucks and trailer, backhoes, excavators, tractors, street sweeper, snow related equipment, flushing/vacuum unit, cranes, forklifts, and   miscellaneous other equipment.
  • Grinds valves and installs pistons and bearings.
  • Disassembles motors and mechanical operating equipment and attachments.
  • Installs and fits new or reconditioned parts.
  • Adjust brakes, clutches, ignitions, and carburetors.
  • Aligns and straightens frames, axles, and wheel assemblies.
  • Repair radiators, body fenders and doors.
  • Tunes engines, small power equipment and water pumps.
  • Operates various automotive testing equipment and power tools used in repair and service work.
  • Performs diagnostic checks of electronic engines controls/emission systems.
  • Performs diagnostic checks of hydraulic systems and related components.
  • May perform acetylene, electric welding, and brazing.
  • Prepares and keeps accurate records.
  • Directs and supervises the work of a helper.
  • Actively participates in various training seminars.
  • Operates trucks and equipment as required to complete functions of an equipment mechanic.
  • Maintains a clean garage and work area.
  • Performs duties in compliance with State and Federal regulations, placing an emphasis on safety.
     

Qualifications:

  • Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and five years experience in mechanical repairs for automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Holds or has the ability to obtain, within six months, A.S.E. Certification and a  State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License with endorsements A,D and E.
  • Knowledge of the operation of internal combustion engines, automotive hydraulic and electrical systems, transmissions, methods of testing, procedures, tools; equipment and materials use in the repairs and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties.
  • Ability to use shop tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate computer programs common to a repair garage.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Ability to work alone with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge of safety practices.
  •  Ability to deal with the public and other departments in a courteous and
  •  tactful manner.
  • Ability to train co-workers in municipal garage related work.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Must possess a valid State of Maine Class B commercial driver’s license with a clean driving record. Class A license preferred. The City of Westbrook will provide classroom and on the road training to obtain the Class B license. 

 

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary range of $26.59/hour-$28.03/hour depending upon experience. 
  • This position is covered by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.  
  • A comprehensive benefits package includes medical (PPO plan at 12% premium cost, plus HRA reimbursement), dental, vision, life insurance (one times base salary), short and long-term disability, and employee assistance program.
