Full-Time Animal Control Officer - Lisbon Police Department

The Lisbon Police Department is seeking a qualified and compassionate professional to serve as our Full-Time Animal Control Officer (ACO). After 33 years of dedicated service, our long-serving ACO is retiring, and we are looking for someone ready to carry on a proud legacy of care, professionalism, and community service. This full-time position serves not only the Town of Lisbon, but also the neighboring communities of Bowdoin, Durham, and Sabattus, for which Lisbon provides contracted ACO services. The ideal candidate will promote public safety and animal welfare through education, enforcement, and strong community partnerships. We’re looking for someone motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of others, while working in an organization that values Integrity, Respect, and Compassion for all.

Minimum Qualifications:

• At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED

• Knowledge of animal care, control, restraint techniques, and animal sheltering

• Experience working with the public is required; prior animal care experience is preferred

• Valid Maine driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment

• Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, physical exam, polygraph, and hearing test

Responsibilities:

The ACO enforces state animal welfare laws and local ordinances, investigates complaints, responds to animal-related emergencies, and educates the public on responsible pet ownership. This role requires strong animal handling skills, compassion, physical endurance, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Starting pay (Grade E): $22.03/hour, commensurate with experience and training

• Full benefits package including health insurance and Maine State Retirement

• Progressive benefit offerings including educational stipends and 25-year retirement
