We are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Payroll Specialist in the Finance Office. This position is responsible for accurately processing and managing the payroll for all municipal employees, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining employee trust through timely and accurate compensation and is vital in supporting the financial and administrative operations of the municipality.
The successful candidate will have solid knowledge of payroll operations, regulations and methods with the ability to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of employee payroll. They will have intermediate to advanced PC skills in Microsoft 365 products, specifically Excel, and have the ability and willingness to learn new software programs as needed. The candidate will be proficient with entering data and performing calculations using a 10-key numeric keypad and have solid typing skills. Experience in Tyler ERP (Munis) and Time & Attendance are preferred. The candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must be self-motivated with strong organizational, mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Must be able to perform highly detailed work under pressure with frequent interruptions, and use independent judgement, as well as multi-task, work within established deadlines, and prioritize daily workload. The position is scheduled for 38 hours per week.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of an associate’s degree in accounting or business administration or equivalent experience. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible payroll administration is required. One (1) year’s experience in accounting or bookkeeping is preferred. Prior experience in a municipal setting preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: The Town of Gorham offers a comprehensive package of pay, benefits, and paid time off to eligible employees. The Town currently pays 90% of the premium cost for all health insurance coverage levels and provides a generous Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) to help cover the cost of out-of-pocket medical expenses, such as deductible and coinsurance. Individuals covered by an alternative health plan are eligible for an annual medical buyout in lieu of coverage (currently $2,250 - $5,048 based on coverage eligibility). In addition to a choice between two excellent health insurance plans and paid vacation, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays per year, employees have access to dental, vision, medical and dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts, life insurance, short-term disability, IRAs, tuition reimbursement, and more. Salary range for Grade 3 positions begins at $26.63/hour and is dependent upon experience and qualifications.
