The Town of Mount Desert, Maine, a picturesque and vibrant community on Mount Desert Island, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Town Manager to replace a long-term manager who is entering retirement. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a dedicated team and shape the future of a town renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including Acadia National Park, and its charming villages.
About Mount Desert:
Mount Desert has approximately 2,061 year-round residents and a significant seasonal population, offering a diverse and engaging environment. Our community values its natural resources, rich history, and strong sense of community. With a municipal budget of approximately $27 million and a staff of approximately 57 full-time dedicated employees and additional seasonal employees. The Town provides a full range of services including public works, public safety (fire/EMS), planning, code enforcement, and administration.
The Ideal Candidate:
We are looking for a visionary and collaborative leader with a proven track record in municipal management. The successful candidate will be:
- A Strategic Thinker: Capable of developing and implementing long-term plans that align with the town's vision and values.
- A Strong Communicator: Able to effectively engage with the Select Board, staff, residents, and various stakeholders.
- An Experienced Administrator: Proficient in municipal finance, budgeting, human resources, and operations.
- A Collaborative Leader: Fosters a positive work environment and builds consensus among diverse groups.
- Community-Oriented: Passionate about serving the needs of the community and enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
- Knowledgeable of Maine Law: Familiarity with Maine municipal law and regulations is highly desirable.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in management, preferably as a Town/City Manager or Assistant Manager, but those with other management experience are urged to apply.
- Demonstrated experience with budget development and financial oversight.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of Mount Desert offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package and has a salary range of $110k to 140K.
