The Town of Kittery has an immediate opening for a Part-Time Library Circulation Assistant. This position may be scheduled for 15 to 18 hours per week. The standard schedule will be Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and two Saturdays per month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The pay rate for this non-exempt, non-union position is $18.00 to $20.00 per hour based on experience.
The purpose of this position is to assist with the excellent delivery of library services to patrons, assist staff and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Library Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Provides excellent customer service toward patrons of all ages through the circulation of materials, reader’s advisory, technology reference services for E-books and other online services;
- Works at both circulation desks, checking materials in and out, answers phone and patron inquiries;
- Assists patrons with use and basic trouble shooting of public computers, Wi-Fi and photocopiers;
- Assists patrons with using library OPAC online or electronic services including Minerva, eBook apps, museum pass and event reservation.
Collection Maintenance
- Processes and fulfills the daily inter-library loan requests;
- Shelves in a timely manner in all areas of the library;
- Scans the shelves and returns any out of order items to the correct order on the shelves;
- Empties both book returns;
- Processes new materials following library standard operating procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs opening and closing procedures;
- Assists with the set up and supporting library events indoors and outdoors;
- Treats all patrons with respect and patience;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Essential Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
Duties require knowledge of standard library policies and practices and library software systems.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with staff and the public, initiative, dependability, using good judgment, tact, and courtesy;
- Proficiency in library technology as pertains to library software including the ability to learn, use, and instruct patrons on the various programs used;
- Ability to multitask with flexibility and prioritization;
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines and av equipment, requiring hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity;

- Must be physically able to occasionally lift and/or move job-related objects or materials up to 25 pounds;
- Must be physically able to regularly sit in front of a computer and speak or listen, walk, bend, or reach with hands and arms;
- Frequently required to climb stairs and/or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch;
- Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls;
- Must have clarity of vision of twenty inches or less;
- Work is normally performed in a pleasant public library environment.
