Transfer Station Operator

The Town of Ogunquit, “Beautiful Place by the Sea,” is seeking applicants for a full-time, year-round Transfer Station Operator. The Transfer Station Operator is responsible for the day to day enforcement of the State and DEP rules and regulations at the Transfer Station. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
•  Assists residents with the proper disposal of items and recycled goods
•  Responsible for filling collection containers and arranging for transport and disposal
•  Operates the compactors, backhoe, loader, and other equipment according to correct procedures.
•  Watches and gauges the roll off containers and contacts vendor when containers are to be emptied
•  Verifies Town stickers on vehicles and collects cash and charges for various items
•  Properly stores and prepares for disposal, shipping, and transport of various materials and wastes
•  Understands and complies with all related regulations regarding the recycling of waste materials, including but not limited to, the Maine Department of Environment Protection and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards
•  Responsible for basic maintenance, minor repairs, and repair reporting of facility equipment/items to supervisor
•  Keeps track of the number of vehicles coming in and out
•  Promotes and educates the public on the benefits of recycling
•  Performs snowplowing and snow removal operations at the transfer station
•  Performs manual work, such as shoveling, raking, loading and unloading materials
•  Performs general custodial landscaping duties at the transfer station
•  Properly stores and prepares for disposal, shipping, and transport of various materials and wastes – such as electronic, household hazardous waste, non-hazardous wastes and special wastes
•  Disposal of dead animals
•  Attends DEP training sessions
•  Must get along with others and work in a professional manner
•  Maintains regular, predictable and reliable attendance
•  Maintain excellent communication and foster a collaborative working environment with all departments as well as with the public
•  Maintains cleanliness and safety in the shop and breakroom
•  Places an emphasis on safety, efficiency, quality and productivity
•  Follows all Town and Department policies
•  Performs related work as required

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
•  Knowledge of solid waste and recycling rules and regulations
•  Skill in the use and care of landscaping and snow removal tools and equipment
•  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook and other computer applications
•  Knowledge of field safety
• Basic math skills

ABILITY TO:
•  Use independent judgment, problem solve and collaborate in order to accomplish tasks
•  Handle money and keep true and accurate records of the same
•  Keep accurate records regarding solid municipal, bulky, and universal waste
•  Provide a high level of customer service to both internal and external customers
•  Communicate professionally and effectively
•  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public
•  Attend any required or recommended training
•  Operate motorized equipment, including compactor, backhoe, fire suppression, grounds care equipment, scales
• When required, fill in for the Transfer Station Manager

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Experience and Education/Training:

•  High School diploma or equivalent
•  Two (2) years’ experience operating light equipment and trucks in construction and maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Licenses/Certifications:

• Current valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Current valid Scale Operator’s License

 Note: Starting rate of pay is $23.15/hr. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. The terms and conditions of employment, including wages, benefits, and working conditions, are subject to a collective bargaining agreement negotiated between the Town and the union representing employees in this role. Appropriate prior experience credit may be given up to and including the 2-year wage bracket. The application period will remain open until the position is filled.
