GENERAL INFORMATION:           Department:  Public Works

Barg. Unit:     AFSCME- Public Works Unit

Status:            Full-Time, Hourly (40+ hours/week)

Grade:            5  ($22.51/hour)

Additional hours may be required for events or emergencies.

SUMMARY: The Traffic Worker performs a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks, related to traffic signs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent GED, plus five (5) years heavy construction experience. Must have a valid State of Maine Class B driver’s license (with tanker endorsement), or able to obtain within first six (6) months of employment.

WORK ACTIVITIES: Operate specialty machines related to traffic control signage and markings. Operate and perform routine maintenance on the City’s traffic line painting machine and the traffic sign manufacturing machine. Install and maintain traffic and street name signs per MUTCD guidelines. Maintain temporary and permanent traffic controlling pavement markings such as center lines, land divider lines, edge lines, stop bars, crosswalks, directional arrows, parking stalls, etc. per MUTCD requirements. Coordinate activities and obtains permits needed to perform work, including Dig-Safe permits. Participate in winter operations such as snowplowing and snow removal. Take part in ongoing training regarding equipment skills and other operations. Interact with the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Must be available for emergency operations and overtime, as required.  Able to follow oral and written instruction, and perform other duties as assigned.
