Are you a skilled wastewater professional ready to take on a leadership role? The City of Westbrook is seeking a dedicated and experienced Wastewater Supervisor to join our Public Services Department. Within this department, the Wastewater Division consists of a close-knit crew of 6 professionals responsible for maintaining the City’s critical wastewater infrastructure.

As the Wastewater Supervisor, you will lead daily operations and long-term projects related to the City’s wastewater collection system. You’ll supervise crews, ensure regulatory compliance, and help maintain the integrity of the infrastructure that supports our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead wastewater crews in the maintenance of pump stations, sewer mains, and related infrastructure.

  • Coordinate and perform inspections, repairs, and maintenance of wastewater equipment including pumps, motors, and control systems.

  • Schedule work assignments and ensure timely completion of projects while maintaining safety and productivity.

  • Review and assess CCTV inspections of sewer infrastructure to determine necessary repairs.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and system performance.

  • Enforce safety protocols, particularly regarding confined space entry and hazardous materials.

  • Manage service requests, respond to public inquiries, and coordinate with other City departments and utility companies.

  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning and improvements in wastewater operations.

Education and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in sewer collection systems.

  • Valid State of Maine CDL, Class B, with Tanker endorsement required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Grade IV Collection System Certification.

  • Strong knowledge of wastewater collection systems, equipment, and safety standards.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency in using computer software for scheduling, inventory control, and reporting.

Preferred Qualities:

  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on operational excellence.

  • Ability to motivate, train, and lead a team effectively.

  • Commitment to customer service and collaboration with external stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with Clean Water Act requirements and regulatory compliance.

Physical & Work Environment:

  • Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. and work in various weather conditions.

  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and working in confined spaces.

  • Exposure to mechanical systems, chemicals, noise, and varying environmental conditions.

  • Must be available for extended hours and emergency response as needed.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary range of $29.51 - $43.33 depending on experience. You are also eligible for an additional $0.50 per hour for each of the following certifications: Wastewater Operator III and Wastewater Operator IV.

  • This position is covered by the General Unit collective bargaining agreement.

  • A comprehensive benefits package includes medical (PPO plan at 12% premium cost, plus HRA reimbursement), dental, vision, life insurance (one times base salary), short and long-term disability, and employee assistance program.

The City of Westbrook was a traditional mill city that has grown and diversified significantly over the last two decades to become a residential hub and business center for the region. Westbrook has a population of over 20,000 and covers 17.36 square miles. Westbrook is centrally located to both urban and rural amenities. The Public Services Department ensures the safe and efficient operation of municipal service systems that enhance the quality of life in Westbrook. This includes the construction, operation, and maintenance of drainage systems, waste management services, municipal properties, roadside mowing, street and sidewalk maintenance, snow and ice removal, and seasonal cleanups. Public Services plays a key role in supporting public safety, environmental sustainability, and emergency response, often collaborating with other City departments to maintain high-quality, citywide services.
