Biddeford’s Fire Department is looking for an Assistant Fire Chief with experience as a fire officer and EMT, with progressive supervisory experience within a Fire Department. This position is best suited for a leader with a vision for community engagement, active and collaborative leadership, and innovative thinking toward managing today’s fire and emergency medical services. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate proven leadership through a high level of uniformed experience in the management of fire departments (deputy, captain, or lieutenant), offer a record of accomplishments in technical skills and have outstanding communication skills to develop and retain credibility, respect, and trust within the Department and throughout the community. The successful candidate will have strong in-depth operational and administrative knowledge in fire, rescue, prevention and fire-based EMS at the Advanced Life Support level along with the demonstrated ability to lead and inspire staff, effectively manage projects, initiatives and resources within the confines of an approved annual operating budget. Our Department is very fast paced, responding to over 5,500 emergency calls annually within the 39 square miles of Biddeford’s rural and urban settings.

Responsibilities

  • Involved in the day-to-day administrative and emergency operations of the Fire Department
  • Will be on call every three weeks
  • Assists the Fire Chief with oversight of staff, including 48 full-time EMS Firefighters, 1 full-time nonunion Deputy Chief, 1 Office Manager, 25 on-call company members, 1 call company Division Chief and District Chief.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 3 years of fire service supervisory experience
  • 8 years of experience as a career firefighter
  • High School education (or equivalent)
  • Advanced-EMT certification
  • Firefighter II Certification (from state of Maine or state with reciprocity)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • A willingness to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion

Finalists may be required to pass background check and physical/psychological exam

Preferred Qualifications

  • Paramedic Certification
  • Certified Fire Officer I & II
  • Associate’s degree (or higher)

Salary: $94,248 - $124,372
