Job Title: Programs Deputy Starting Pay: $27.88/hr (after 7/1/2025)
Job Relationship:
- Responsible to: Assigned to the Transport Division and shall be directly supervised by the Sergeant (or the Chief Deputy in their absence.)
- Manner of Review and Approval of Work: Through direct observation of activities and results achieved, including annual performance evaluation.
Job Definition: Full-time Job Summary: Coordinates outreach programs by planning, implementing, managing and documenting initiatives designed to reduce inmate incarceration time. Oversee alternative sentencing and graduated sanction initiatives working collaboratively with probation officers and community-based organizations. Perform duties of a Transport Deputy as required/assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be thoroughly knowledgeable of all Standard Operating Procedures, Post Orders, Legal Documents, etc., and assure they are adhered to.
- Possess and maintain a law enforcement certification through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
- Work independently and/or as a member of a team in the performance of duties.
- Work harmoniously with all county employees, corrections personnel, probationers, inmates and community members.
- Properly maintain all assigned equipment, weapons, uniforms and gear.
- Use appropriate, professional interpersonal communication skills in all interactions.
- Assist in development of rules and regulations, procedures, forms and other administrative requirements necessary to ensure proper management of outreach programs.
- Coordinate the outreach/diversion program in collaboration with probation officers and various community-based treatment providers, including but not limited to Midcoast Hospital Addiction Resource Center.
- Identify potential clients for specific programs by interviews, referrals, review of inmate request and background documentation.
- Ensure all necessary legal documents and contracts are completed before beginning or accepting a client into an outreach program. Once accepted, maintain accurate complete case management records.
- Prepare and disseminate information related to the outreach program relevant to number of clients, length of stay in program, any associated costs and other information as requested.
- Perform compliance checks on clients who are under contract for graduated sanctions, home-release or have conditions of release imposed on them by the Court, Probation Officers or Maine Pretrial Services. This may include electronic monitoring, and the application/removal of such equipment as well as the processing and recording of related fees.
- Comply with all policies, procedures, standards and laws which relate to the movement of prisoners, ensuring the safe, secure and efficient transportation of inmates as necessary.
- Remain vigilant and alert for the potential of danger while interacting with or moving a prisoner.
- Assisting the intake or booking officer at the jail as required.
- Performing the duties of a Transport Deputy may be required, including occasional shifts, potentially overnight, guarding residents receiving medical care in a hospital.
- Assisting the staff of the Law Enforcement Division may be required.

The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud.
Specifications/Qualifications:
- Education and training: High school graduate or equivalent.
- Successfully complete a criminal history check to standards officially adopted by the Sheriff’s Office.
- Law Enforcement Pre-Service or full-time Certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
- Good communications skills are necessary, as is the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Performance of good judgment and decision-making capabilities is highly desired.
- Demonstrate a good working knowledge of computer skills such as Word and Excel.
- Valid State of Maine driver’s license with no “at fault” traffic accidents or no serious traffic offenses reported within the last three years.
