Tax Assessor - City of Saco

The Position

The City of Saco, one of Maine’s fastest growing cities, seeks an exceptional assessing professional to serve as the City Tax Assessor.  This position is an excellent opportunity to join a fantastic team to make a difference in an organization and city constantly seeking ways to provide best-in-class services to a fast-growing community. 

The Tax Assessor, as an agent of the State of Maine, is responsible for mass appraising real estate and personal property for the purposes of distributing fair and equitable taxation within the City and for the administration and maintenance of all records necessary to administer the assessment program, and for performing regular revaluations and/or market adjustments as needed. 

The City Assessor is the department head position overseeing the Assessing team members and reporting directly to the City Administrator.  

 

The Community

The City of Saco is located at the mouth of the Saco River in southern Maine along the Atlantic Ocean, less than 20 minutes south of the Greater Portland Area, and less than two hours north of Boston, Massachusetts.  Home to a growing population of 19k+ residents, a revitalized and repurposed mill district, world-class education system, a thriving economy, and many recreational opportunities, including fishing, hiking, biking, and kayaking, the City of Saco has plenty to offer residents, visitors, and businesses alike.  With easy transportation via Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, and as a destination stop along the Amtrak Downeaster, Saco’s residents, visitors, and labor force have easy access to and from the city.  Comprised of 39 square miles, with farmland and areas of resource protection to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east -- and a picturesque and historic Main Street at its center -- Saco boasts a diverse landscape that has something to offer for everyone.

 

The Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, or related field, and eight (8) years of experience in property assessment work involving the appraisal and evaluation of land and buildings, including some experience in the maintenance of standard office records; or any equivalent combination of experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Master's Degree is preferred. Must possess a valid Maine State Assessor’s Certificate and a valid State of Maine driver’s license.
