Assistant Town Clerk - Town of Scarborough

 

The Town of Scarborough is seeking an Assistant Town Clerk to support and assist the Town Clerk with the varied activities of the Clerk’s office. Responsibilities include the validation of official documents, issuance of licenses and permits, fee collection, recording documents and vital statistics, supervision of elections within the Town, and preparing Town Council agendas and informational packets. This position also assists in the supervision of the Deputy Town Clerks and acts for the Town Clerk in his or her absence.

The Town is seeking to hire the eventual successor to the current Town Clerk.  As such, the Assistant Town Clerk will work closely with the Town Clerk and will be trained with the intention of succeeding the current Town Clerk as they transition into another role with the organization or into retirement. 

Position Requirements: Thorough knowledge and understanding of the State Statutes relating to the duties and responsibilities of Town and City Clerks. Ability to rapidly acquire and assimilate knowledge of the provisions of the Town Charter, Town ordinances and State regulations relating to the operation of the office and Town government, and the ability to communicate this to office staff, other Town officials and the public. Excellent customer service skills, the ability to prepare and maintain complete clerical records, and the ability to work effectively and independently with the public, Town officials and colleagues. 

Experience/Education: Considerable experience in clerical work in a responsible nature, including public-facing. High school graduate supplemented by post-secondary courses in accounting, business, and computer technology preferred. Prior experience in a municipal environment and Notary Public preferred. Should be a certified Assistant Town Clerk or capable of being certified.
