The City of South Portland is currently seeking a full-time Deputy Finance Director to join our Finance Department. This is an opportunity to join a well-run city and play a part in serving our community. We are seeking a steady individual with solid finance skills to collaborate with the Finance Director and to act as a resource for our staff and residents.

Position Summary: This position has a high level of responsibility with management work related to the city’s financial operations, performed under the general direction of the Finance Director and in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Finance Director in the management of the Finance Department, including management and oversight of general accounting, AP/AR, treasury, payroll, and auditing activities. This position also manages the annual financial audit process and preparation of the ACFR.

Work is performed with considerable discretion and independent judgement under the general supervision of the City Finance Director. This position directly supervises and evaluates one professional staff accountant and provides general supervision and oversight to all other finance and accounting staff. 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required.  Master’s Degree in a finance or business discipline, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) is a plus.

Experience: At least five (5) years of related experience in municipal finance, governmental audit or non-profit accounting.  At least three of those years must include supervisory experience.  Must have working knowledge of GAAP and GASB standards.  Experience with Tyler Munis software is a plus.          

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class “C” driver’s license throughout employment.

This is a salaried position with a 37.5 hour standard schedule over a four day week, with the option of remote or in-office flex time on Fridays. The Deputy responsibilities require a flexible schedule with longer than normal office hours to meet cyclical deadlines, and may include after-hours meetings.

Starting Salary Range: $49.64 - $55.97/hour ($96,798 - $109,141 annually) depending on experience.  This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
